The Half-Acre Homestead by Lloyd Kahn and Lesley Creed
The Half-Acre Homestead by Lloyd Kahn and Lesley Creed
SUPERFOLK SAYS:
“Lloyd, the former shelter editor of The Whole Earth Catalog, has published seven books on owner building, showcasing hundreds of builders. This is his first book based on his own home. Starting with a vacant half-acre piece of land, they built their own home, created a garden with vegetables and fruit, and describe raising chickens, bees, and goats. The book also covers cooking, foraging, fishing, crafts, birds, butterflies, and tools. This was all done by hand and they have never had a mortgage.”
ABOUT THIS BOOK:
Lloyd Kahn has been producing books on building for 50 years now and here, for the first time, he relates his own building experiences.
The Half-Acre Homestead is a record, with over 500 color photos, of Lloyd and his wife Lesley’s owner-built home and garden. They show you what the house and garden look like, how various functions (solar panels, septic systems, skylights, etc.) operate, and tools they use in the kitchen, garden, and shop.
There are recipes and sections on fishing and foraging.
There are descriptions of raised beds, raising chickens, and collecting rainwater.
There are photos of Lesley’s quilts, weavings, and baskets.
Also shown are flowers, vegetables, birds, and spiderwebs.
There is advice for anyone thinking of building a home these days.

ABOUT LLOYD KAHN / SHELTER PUBLICATIONS:
In the mid-‘60s, Lloyd Kahn quit his job in the insurance business and began working as a carpenter, first building post and beam houses, then geodesic domes. In 1968, he became the shelter editor of The Whole Earth Catalog, which led him to publish two books on dome building and then, in 1973, the book Shelter (which went on to sell 270,000 copies). Lloyd’s been writing ever since.
Lloyd’s publishing company, Shelter Publications, has now published eight books on building; this series is called The Shelter Library Of Building Books. Included are Home Work, the sequel to Shelter, Tiny Homes, and Lloyd’s favorite, Builders of the Pacific Coast.
